Jock Itch
What is Jock Itch?
- Jock itch is an itchy, stinging, contagious rash that can affect your groin folds, upper thighs and butt crack.
- It is called Jock itch because it is common in athletes.
- However, anyone who gets sweaty down there can be prone to it.
What causes Jock Itch?
- It is caused by an overgrowth of fungi called dermatophytes
- These fungi like to live in moist places where skin touches skin, like your groin, feet and armpit.
- If the skins natural protective barrier is broken down by a build up of sweat or other moisture, these fungi can really multiply and do damage to your sensitive skin.
- A fungal infection in your feet can spread to your groin and vice versa, so proper hygiene is important.
What are the symptoms of Jock Itch?
- Symptoms of jock itch can include…

Is Jock Itch dangerous?
- Jock itch typically does not go away on its own.
- If left untreated it can spread to other parts of your body.
- With treatment and proper management, Jock Itch should go away in 1 to 3 weeks.
- Jock itch is rarely dangerous, but can be very uncomfortable.
Can I prevent Jock Itch?
- Don’t let sweat build up on the skin – wash it off with a pH balanced wash like Dr Macks as soon as possible. (If you do a job where you are sitting all day and sweat is building up, this may mean washing during the day)
- Make sure to thoroughly pat dry the groin folds and all areas involved with a clean towel.
- Dry your groin first and your feet last, as sometimes the fungus spreads from your feet to your groin.
- Always wear clean underwear made of natural breathable materials
- Don’t wear clothes that are too tight
- When you can, wear boxer shorts
rather than tight underwear that doesn’t let your skin breath.
What should I do if I think I have Jock Itch?
- Jock itch rarely goes away on its own. You may need an over the counter antifungal cream, or antifungal tablets.
- Practice good genital hygiene
- If your rash is not improving with over the counter antifungal treatments, please see a doctor in person who may prescribe medication or other individually tailored treatments.
