What is Lichen Sclerosus?
- Lichen Sclerosus is an inflammatory condition that can cause white, itchy, sometimes scaly patches on the skin.
- It can affect men and women.
- It can affect the skin anywhere. but it commonly affects the skin in the genital and anal areas.
- In men it often affects the penis and foreskin, when it is sometimes also called Balanitis Xerotica Obliterans (BXO)
What causes Lichen Sclerosus?
- No one really knows what causes Lichen Sclerosus.
- It may be due to an abnormal immune system. Genetics and hormonal changes may also play a role.
- It is not due to poor hygiene, but poor hygiene can aggravate the symptoms

Is Lichen Sclerosus dangerous?
- Lichen Sclerosus can cause scarring, tightening of the foreskin and phimosis.
- Lichen Sclerosus is not contagious and is not an STD.
- There is a small increased risk of developing penis or anal cancer if you have lichen sclerosus.
Can I prevent Lichen Sclerosus?
- Lichen Sclerosus is a chronic condition - You can not prevent it.
- But you can try not to aggravating some of the symptoms.

- gently pat dry your genitals after urinating
- regularly apply a barrier cream or ointment
- wear natural breathable underwear
- avoid itching and scratching damaged skin
- avoid activities that aggravate your symptoms until things have calmed down.
What should I do if I think I have Lichen Sclerosus?
- If you think you have Lichen Sclerosus, you need to see a doctor.
- They may prescribe medicated ointments, light therapy or immunosuppressants to help control symptoms, and they may choose to review you regularly.
- If Lichen Sclerosus is causing scarring and tightening of the foreskin, you may require a circumcision.
