Paraphimosis
What is Paraphimosis?
- This is where the foreskin becomes trapped behind the glans of the penis and it can look a bit like there are rubber bands around the penis.
What causes Paraphimosis?
- It is caused when a foreskin has been pulled back and is then not replaced back over the head of the penis.
What are the symptoms of Paraphimosis?
- The foreskin will not return to its proper place.
- Pain
- Swelling of the penis
- A change of colour of the skin of the penis to blue or purple
Is Paraphimosis dangerous?
- Yes
- Paraphimosis is an emergency and it is important for you to get medical help as quickly as possible.
- If you do not get help, paraphimosis can cut off the blood supply to your penis and cause permanent damage.
Can I prevent Paraphimosis?
- The only way to definitively prevent paraphimosis is to be fully circumcised.
- If you have one, always replace your foreskin back over the head of the penis after it has been pulled back.
- Do not leave the foreskin pulled back for any longer than you need to for cleaning or other
reason.
What should I do if I think I have Paraphimosis?
- Paraphimosis is a medical emergency because the tightness can cut off blood flow and cause permanent damage to the tissue of the penis.
- If you think you have phimosis, you need to call a doctor immediately – they may
refer you to an emergency room.
- It will not go away on its own.
