Paraphimosis

What is Paraphimosis?

  • This is where the foreskin becomes trapped behind the glans of the penis and it can look a bit like there are rubber bands around the penis.

What causes Paraphimosis?

  • It is caused when a foreskin has been pulled back and is then not replaced back over the head of the penis.

What are the symptoms of Paraphimosis?

  • The foreskin will not return to its proper place.

  • Pain

  • Swelling of the penis

  • A change of colour of the skin of the penis to blue or purple

Is Paraphimosis dangerous?

  • Yes
  • Paraphimosis is an emergency and it is important for you to get medical help as quickly as possible.
  • If you do not get help, paraphimosis can cut off the blood supply to your penis and cause permanent damage.

Can I prevent Paraphimosis?

  • The only way to definitively prevent paraphimosis is to be fully circumcised.

  • If you have one, always replace your foreskin back over the head of the penis after it has been pulled back.

  • Do not leave the foreskin pulled back for any longer than you need to for cleaning or other
    reason.

What should I do if I think I have Paraphimosis?

  • Paraphimosis is a medical emergency because the tightness can cut off blood flow and cause permanent damage to the tissue of the penis.

  • If you think you have phimosis, you need to call a doctor immediately – they may
refer you to an emergency room.

  • It will not go away on its own.
