
Phimosis
What is Phimosis?
- Phimosis is a condition in uncircumcised men where their foreskin gets too tight and can not be pulled back.
- Phimosis is normal in newborns and young boys
- Most boys can retract their foreskin by the time they hit puberty.
- Phimosis can be mild, moderate or severe, and management depends on the type of phimosis
you have.
What causes Phimosis?
- Poor genital hygiene can lead to balanitis and in turn, phimosis.
- Other causes include:
- -skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, lichen planus and BXO
- -adhesions (this is scar tissue that keeps your foreskin attached to your glans/head of your penis)
- -infections including STDS
- -Injuries
- -Men with diabetes are more likely to get phimosis
What are the symptoms of Phimosis?
- Symptoms depend on the severity of the phimosis.
- A mild phimosis may cause no symptoms.

Is Phimosis dangerous?
- If phimosis is severe, you can not retract your foreskin and are in pain or discomfort as a result, you may require circumcision (an operation to remove the foreskin).
Can I prevent Phimosis?
- You can not prevent all the causes of phimosis.
- You can prevent some of the infections that cause phimosis
by cleaning your penis every day with a pH adjusted wash like Dr Macks Cleaner. - Be gentle when pulling your foreskin back, never force it back, and put in back it place when you have finished cleaning and drying.

What should I do if I think I have Phimosis?
- If you think you have phimosis and it is causing you symptoms, you need to see a doctor for assessment and treatment.
- Treatments depend on the severity of the phimosis and can range from using low dose steroid creams to circumcision.
